Story
The city of New Rome faces a duel between Caesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who favors a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part because of its financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001, after 30 hours of second unit footage and a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was shelved after the September 11 attacks because the script’s plot (p. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not resume development until 2019.
It’s actually the same footage flipped and slightly distorted

The film could have been set in a more realistic location
Unclear sentiments. Megalopolis is an epic and silly mix of different films (Babylon, Casanova, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Batman, Hudsucker Proxy and the miniseries Hollywoodland, etc.). Coppola recycles many of the styles of some famous directors like Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti. His voice is somewhere in the fleeting details, which unfortunately reminds of his weaker films, like “One from The Heart”. Then the fantasy of Megalopolis would have been more effective in creating a sense of wow.
There were thoughtful and beautiful ideas
And what’s the point of stupid and unjustified theatricality, or should we just say theater? I personally hate this approach, which makes me vomit in my mouth Baz Luhrmann. It undermines the serious credibility of the story. Based on this point, there are many loose moments for no reason: the falling of hats, the weird dance pose during the first scene and the general atmosphere. However, I liked the last quarter of the film.
The ending was also good
The story is quite good with connections to ancient Rome, etc. And without constant interference, the film could have been a decent adult fairy tale. Unfortunately, the rambling, restless theatrical stupidity eats up too much of everything.
